GlideFlex System

GlideFlex is an assistive self-feeding system designed to support children ages 4–12 with cerebral palsy. The concept addresses challenges associated with spasticity, motor control and muscle coordination by supporting the plate-to-mouth motion required for more independent eating.

Design Overview

The system combines three coordinated features: a sliding armrest that supports reach, an assistive utensil designed to reduce wrist flexion, and an elevated plate platform. Together, these components aim to make the feeding motion more stable and reduce the physical effort required from the hand, wrist and arm.

Development & Feasibility

The team moved from user needs and physiological research through concept selection, muscle analysis, CAD development and prototyping. The proposed testing plan combined electromyography with functional eating trials to evaluate muscular demand and task performance. The final presentation also considered materials, fabrication, cleaning, safety and future design refinements.
