Sophia S. Liau

Sophia Liau

nice to meet you!

I'm Sophia Liau, a motivated biomedical engineering student at the University of British Columbia. Currently in my third year, I intend on pursuing the bioinformatics stream, with a particular interest in the impacts of machine learning within our field. Furthermore, I am also completing a minor in commerce through UBC Sauder. I’m excited to grow intellectually within the following few years of my degree.

As a student in the Applied Science CO-OP program, I’m also passionate about leveraging my skills to contribute to innovative projects and foster inclusive, positive environments. I thrive in collaborative settings and am dedicated to continuous learning.

I am also the current Social Coordinator for the Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Association. Over this 2025-2026 school year, I have planned and executed 9 events, ranging from a campus wide scavenger hunt, smaller scale crafting socials, ice skating, parties and the first ever BMEG formal. I'm incredibly proud of my team's work in BMEUSA, compounding in our achievement of the Department of the Year award. I am excited to be the VP Academic for the 2026-2027 year!

I grew up in Saskatchewan, coming from a childhood filled with competitive dance and other academic extra-curriculars. Nowadays, I enjoy hot pilates (I recommend Jaybird) and hosting friends!
